Key facts

A green bush-cricket with faint speckles,frequenting dense, shrubby vegetation, including in gardens

Nymphs can often be seen on low vegetation in May, but later in the year tends to hide itself higher up

Widespread in Essex and across southern England

Recognition

Green body covered with tiny dark spots, and very short wings, making it flightless

Body up to 2 cm long; females with a short up-curved ovipositor

Stridulation is only audible a few feet away

Lifecycle

Female lays her eggs in tree bark in late summer and the nymphs emerge the following May
